A Brief History of Joshua Tree Council

Girl Scouts - Joshua Tree Council was chartered in 1947 under the name Bakersfield Council of Girl Scouts. The council has grown from several fledgling troops to a council which today serves Kern County and portions of San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and San Luis Obispo Counties.

Girl Scouts - Joshua Tree Council is one of 313 councils chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA. As a non-profit corporation in California, the council is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our board members come from all areas of our council and bring to the board a broad diversity of business, professional and personal experience, as well as a commitment to the vision and values of Girl Scouting.

The council is autonomous and receives no government funding.

Financial support for Girl Scout programs comes from grants, federated agencies (such as United Way), and from the annual fall product sale and Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program. An important source of funding also comes from tax-deductible donations made by individuals and businesses.
